SILVERDOCS 2007 Sessions

SILVERDOCS selected several films whose genesis and/or distribution related to the Filmanthropy theme. Each of these films met one of the following criteria: it was funded by a non-profit advocacy organization; commissioned/financed by an entity or donor as a means to engage audiences and change public opinion; or the filmmaker partnered with a nonprofit and/or advocacy group to market the film.

The films included:

  • THE DEVIL CAME ON HORSEBACK (June 13, 6pm) is an exposé of the violence and tragedy of the genocide in Darfur as seen through the eyes of a lone American witness.
  • ORTHODOX STANCE (June 13, 8pm) is a film about a successful Orthodox Jewish boxer that was supported by the Foundation for Jewish Culture.
  • WAR/DANCE (June 14, 8:30pm) tells the story of former child soldiers in northern Uganda empowered by the collaborative nature of a music and dance competition. The film was funded by Shine Global.
  • NANKING (June 15, 5:45pm) which was funded by noted philanthropist Ted Leonsis in an effort to raise awareness about an important and tragic moment in Chinese history.

The complete SILVERDOCS 2007 schedule is available here.

The Filmanthropy Program at SILVERDOCS 2007

In addition to the selected films, the Conference featured sessions that explored critical issues and best practices, and actively connected nonprofit leaders and media makers. While these kinds of connections are often made behind the scenes, placing this program within the context of a large public event – SILVERDOCS – drew media and academic interest to this emerging alliance between nonprofits, philanthropists and filmmakers.

Web 2.0 may be a buzz phrase, but that doesn’t alter the fact that there is a sea change in the way the public is viewing and interacting with all types of media. Why should documentarians care? Creators of all stripes are beginning to look to the Internet as a vehicle for distribution, promotion, and dialogue with their communities. The number of Web-based tools that facilitate these tasks is increasing exponentially: blogs, newsfeeds, video upload sites, virtual worlds, social networking sites, review aggregators, recommendation engines, and search engine optimization, among the most popular. Choosing well from amidst this plethora will give any creator a better chance at distinguishing their efforts and reaching truly appreciative audiences.
