The Program

Students in the 45-hour program take courses in both the School of Communication and School of International Service, acquiring professional research skills, a broad knowledge of global economic and political issues and a deeper understanding of how media work, especially in an international environment.

In addition, students hone their writing skills over a broad range of media while also taking production classes in such areas as filmmaking, Web design, news writing, and digital imaging.

Admission to the Program:

To qualify for admission, applicants must:

  • hold an accredited bachelor’s degree with a cumulative grade point average of, at least, 3.30 or higher on a 4.0 scale.
  • submit results of the Graduate Record Examination (GRE).
  • International applicants whose first language is not English are required to submit results of the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL). Note: A strong TOEFL score is necessary to ensure that students can fully benefit from the media production courses and analytical courses
  • submit two letters of reference evaluating undergraduate academic performance and suitability for graduate study in international affairs and communication.
  • maintain a 3.0 GPA, overall, in order to remain in good academic standing, and must receive a “B,” or above, in all in-lieu of thesis classes. Requests for the transfer of a maximum of six graduate credits will be considered only on an exceptional basis.
  • some background knowledge of communication studies, or media/journalism professional experience, or international studies and international work experience will be a plus.

Applying:

Students should apply either to SIS or SOC, depending on where they intend to complete their research and capstone projects. The School in which the student completes the research and capstone projects will award the degree.

Student applications will be reviewed, jointly, by SOC and SIS, with both schools agreeing on student admission.
