SOC's annual VISIONS festival honors top SOC students whose work meets the highest standards of artistic and professional excellence.

The VISIONS festival, which attracts respected media industry professionals and students from all disciplines, culminates with two major events: The VISIONS Festival Award Ceremony (Friday, May 1) and The VISIONS Screening of Award Winning Films (Saturday, May 2).

VISIONS 2009 SUBMISSIONS GUIDELINES:

  • Applicants must list any and all collaborators as requested on the application. Incomplete applications or materials will not be considered.

  • Music and other copyrighted material, for which you are not claiming fair use, must be cleared for NON EXCLUSIVE home video, educational, online, broadcast and theatrical distribution. Students submitting documentaries may use the “Documentary Filmmakers’ Statement of Best Practices in Fair Use” as a guide located on the Center For Social Media website (centerforsocialmedia.org).

  • Students may only submit one film per category.
STUDENTS MUST TURN IN THE FOLLOWING MATERIAL WITH THEIR
COMPLETED APPLICATION:

General Submissions:


• An authored DVD of your full submission for judging purposes.
• For exhibition purposes:
o A full resolution QuickTime
o A compressed version of your submission for the web
Suggested Web Compression:
• *Video*
• h.264
• 15 fps
• size 400x300 px (for 4:3)
• size 533x300 px (for 16:9)
• frame re-ordering-best quality
• multi-pass encoding
• prepare for Internet streaming- fast start
• limit data rate to 700 Kbits/sec
• *Audio*
• AAC
• stereo or mono
• 16 bit
• sampled at 44.1 kHz/sec
• target bit rate @128 kbits/sec
o A 15 to 30 second trailer of your completed work
o Press pack optional (which can include hi-res. and web res. Production stills)

Photography Submissions:

• Mounted prints including photographer’s name, title, date, and a DVD or CD of digital
versions at 300 dpi in jpeg format
• Photography Installation: Written description including title, artist's name,
materials/format used, and dimensions in PDF or MS Word
Outstanding Digital Still Manipulation Category:

• DVD or CD; acceptable file formats include Flash, Quicktime, PDF, JPEG, GIF, PNG

Outstanding Website Category:

• CD/DVD (containing website) or URL with a written description in PDF or MS Word

Screenwriting

• All scripts must be submitted on hard and electronic copy (on a CD or DVD).

Screenwriting Deadline: Students by Friday, April 17, 2009 to the SUB HUB (Mary
Graydon Room 325 by 5pm
Final Deadline: Students by Friday, April 24, 2009 to the SUB HUB (Mary Graydon
Room 325 by 5pm on Friday, April 24, 2009 or at the VISIONS DROP OFF PARTY the
same day.

TERMS AND CONDITIONS

American University (“University”) to the taking of photographs, motion pictures and/or audio
tape recordings of myself (herein “Materials”) and screen the materials I have submitted for
Visions 2009.

I hereby consent to and authorize the University to use and/or publish said Materials for the
following purposes:

1. Teaching and information applications;
2. Professional journals and papers;
3. Institutional publicity and public relations, including without limitation the
publication of my image on the University’s website;
4. Archival purposes; and
5. Any other purpose which the University deems fit in the interest of education,
knowledge, research, marketing, advertising, or public relations.

I agree that all right, title and interest in and to all such photographs, motion pictures and audio
tapes and any reproductions or derivative work thereof shall be the exclusive property of
American University. I understand that the University may keep or may use the Materials and
derivative works now and in the future.

I agree that the University does not owe me any compensation for the acts that I have consented to in this agreement.

I hereby release American University, its officers, directors, agents and employees from all
liability or legal responsibility that may arise from the acts that I have authorized or consented to herein.
