As a project of American University’s School of Communication, the Institute provides resources, conferences and other opportunities to help nonprofit organizations utilize strategic communication and new media to achieve their goals. In partnership with the Institute, SILVERDOCS presented a day-long workshop titled "Filmanthropy" on June 16, 2007, to explore the changing ways in which filmmakers, nonprofits and advocacy groups interact.

2007 Filmanthropy Workshop

What: Filmanthropy Workshop: Facilitating Creative and Strategic Partnerships; a one-day workshop for documentary filmmakers and nonprofit executives

Who: Filmmakers, philanthropists, nonprofit administrators, professors and other interested parties

When: June 12-17 (Filmanthropy Workshop wass Saturday, June 16, 2007.)

Where: AFI Silver Theatre and Cultural Center (8633 Colesville Road in Silver Spring, MD)

Why: The workshop addressed the challenge of balancing filmmakers' allegiance to narrative with nonprofits' desire to communicate a message through issue-oriented documentary films.
